Contract for Labor
This indenture made & entered into on the 29th day of Dec 1865 between S R Hilliard of the County of Nash State of North Carolina of the first part and the undersigned freed laborers of the second part.
Witnesseth that the said laborers have agreed to work for the said S R Hilliard from the 1st January 1866 to the 1st January 1867 to do all kinds of labor common to the farms of the County to do their work faithfully & to be respectful in their deportment. And they further agree that one half of their years pay shall be retained by the said Saml R Hilliard untill this end of the year & that the amount so retained shall be forfeited by a violation of this contract, and they farther agree that time lost by idleness or absence without leave shall not be paid for, and this said S R Hilliard has agreed that he will furnish the said laborers & one child with comfortable quarters sufficient rations & a fourth of the crop that the said laborers may make and treat them kindly
