Contract for Labor
This indenture. Made and entered into on the 28th day of Dec 1865 - between Saml R Hilliard of the county of Nash & state of N Carolina; of the first part; and the undersigned, freed laborers of the second part.
Witnesseth that the said laborers have agreed to work for the said Saml R Hilliard from the 1st day of January 1866 to the first day of January 1867 to do all kind of work common to the farmers of the County, to do this work faithfully, and to be respectful in their deportment. And they farther agree, that one half of their monthly pay shall be retained by the said Saml R Hilliard untill the end of this year and that the amount so retained shall be forfeited by a violation of this contract. And they farther agree that time lost by idle ness or absence without leave shall not be paid for. And the said Saml R Hilliard has agreed that he will furnish the said laborers with comfortable quarters, sufficient rations the amount of money per month which stands opposit their respective names and treat them kindly.
