This Indenture made & entered this 1st Day 1866 between  Michael Williams of the County of Edgecombe & State of North Carolina [[strikethrough]] of the same [[/strikethrough]] part & Ben Lewellyn of same County & State of Second part
Witnesseth: That the said party of the Second part hath this day hired to said party of the first part his daughter Ruth Lewellyn aged sixteen years & promises that said Ruth shall perform all the duties of a good house girl & when necessary work in the field, to be considered what is termed generally useful - The party of the Second part further agrees that said girl Be obedient & obey all such [[strikethrough]] commands [[/strikethrough]] orders as may be regarded reasonable & proper among reasonable people - A refusal to comply with customary demands, will be condition of forfeiture
The party of the first part for said services agrees to pay him of the Second part for his daughter five dollars ($5) per month; one half of each months pay on the expiration of said month the other on the 1st Jany 1867 -  
Time lost by refusal to work or by absence without leave to be deducted; & a continuation of such violation of contract to amount to a forfeiture of all wages due for former labours.
