This Indenture made & Entered into this 1st Day January 1866 Between Wm H Mayo of the County of Edgecombe and State of North Carolina of the one one Part & the undersigned Freedmen & women of the second part X Witnesseth that the parties of the second Part have agreed to Become Labours on the farm of Wm H. Mayo from the present-time to the 1st January 1867 they agree to do all kind of farm work comon to the farm of the county to obey all the regulations proper for the X Government of the farm to render the amount of Labor faithfully that is usual for their capasity that they shall be ready for work at daylight & quit work at dark that said Laborous shall have at Breakfast one hour & fifteen minutes time which shal Be determine By the Blowing of the horn they are to remain untill the Expiration of the year in contract And they further agree that two thirds the amount & due As wages shal Be retained till the End of the year & if the contract should Be violated that the amount due As wages at the time of such X violation shal Be forfeited a refusal to perform the proper amount of Labor unless in case of sickness shal Be considered a violation of the contract & the amount of Labour lost shal Not Be Paid for
