This agreement made and entered into this 1st day of January 1866 between J.P. Jenkins of the county of Nash and the sate of N. Carolina, of the first part and Burrel Harrison (Freedman) of the county and state afore said of the second part, witnessith that the said Burrel Harrison hath agreed that he will work for the said J.P. Jenkins from 1st day of January 1866 to the 1st January 1867 as a laborer on his farm and do all work common to a farm to do his work faithfully & be respectful in his deportment. In consideration where of the said Jenkins agrees and obligates himself to pay the said Burrel Harrison one hundred & twenty dollars and find him one pair of shoes no 12, and board him. And failure on the part of said Burrel Harrison to comply faithfully with the contract, shall make a forfeiture of his wages. Deduction to be made for all lost time either by sickness or other wise. Given under the hand & seal this day and date above written
