Articles of agreement made and entered into on this the first day of January Eighteen Hundred and sixty six between David E. Sumner of the county of Nash and State of North Carolina on the one part and Dempsey formerly the property of Lewis Sumner and Isaac formerly the property of the said David E. Sumner but now find men on the other part Witnessith that the said Dempsey doth hereby find himself and his two sons Hilliard & Haywood and the said Issac doth likewise find himself to work on the farm of the said Sumner upon the following Terms and conditions (viz.) The said Sumner is to furnish two good work horses and all the necessary farming tools & furnish the horses with food and land sufficient for them to work free of rent and the said Dempsey with his two sons Hilliard and Haywood and the said Isaac bargain and agree to cultivate the lands of the said Sumner in a good farmer-like manner and be subject to his orders and instructions and the same to be managed in accordance with his [[attempt at rub out]] his [[/attempt at rub out]] commands and the said Isaac and Dempsey and his two sons Hilliard and Haywood are to be obedient to and subject to the orders of said Sumner and upon their complying with this contract they are to have one third of the entire crop raised on the farm- the said Dempsey is to be at the expense of boarding himself and his two sons and Isaac is also to board himself and the said Sumner agrees to furnish them such provisions as they may need which they are to account for at the close of the year Eighteen Hundred and sixty six- In witness of all articles the said parties have signed their names
