This article of agreement made & entered into this the 1st day of January 1866. between Dempsey Trevathan of the first part, & the following freedmen (former slaves of the said Dempsey Trevathan) Viz. Peter Arthur, Willis, Blount, Pomp, Peter, Samuel & S[[?]] of the second part, all of the county of Edgecombe & State of North Carolina; Witnesseth; that the said Dempsey Trevathan agrees to furnish the above named freedmen with one hundred & fifty acres of land to cultivate the present year & also to furnish five Horses or Mules, Plows, Carts & all implements necessary to carry in the farm & to feed the Team & furnish rations and quarters to said freedmen every day they work on the farm or for the said Dempsey Trevathan & the said freedmen are to have one fourth of the crop or products they make this year, but say freedmen are not to take or sell any of the products of said farm without the consent of the said Dempsey & the said freedmen agree to cultivate said farm according to the instruction of said Dempsey & that if they incur any debts during the year, that he the said Dempsey is to be paid before they can sell this interest in said farm & the said freedmen
