The undersigned agree to work on the farm of Wm S Battle in the county of Edgecombe from this date to the first of January 1867. & to do all kinds of work usual on the farm in the County for the amounts opposite their respective names on the following terms, viz:
1st They shall work under any manager the said Battle shall place in charge of his business, and prompt obedience to his orders and respectful conduct to him are required.
2nd From the first of June to the first of September the laborers shall be at their posts at work by sunrise and quit at sunset with two (2) hours for dinner. The rest of the year the interval for dinner shall be one hour & they shall be at their work as soon as they can see by day light and work as long as they can see by day light in the evening. Night work shall not be required except under some pressing emergency to be determined by the manager. Saturday afternoon may be holiday except during cotton picking, fodder saving, or some pressing emergency to be determined by the manager, but the laborers will not be allowed to quit work or to take holidays without his consent. The Saturday afternoon's work will be paid for extra.
3rd Unusual assemblies on the plantation should not be allowed, nor the visits of objectionable persons permitted.
4th The manager may discharge any employee at any time for idling or breach of contract in in which case one half of the wages then due shall be forfeited, and after the expiration of one week, such discharged employee with his family shall vacate the premises; or if not said employee his
