Contract for Labor
This indenture made and entered into on the first (1st) day of January A.D. 1866 between R H Gorham of the County of Edgecomb and State of North Carolina of the first part and the undersined freed Laborers of the Second part. Witnesseth that the said laborers have agreed to work for the Said R H Gorham from this date to the 1st day of January 1867 to do all kinds of Labor common to the farms of the country to work from light to light to do there work faithful and to be respectful in there deportment. And they further agree to Cultivate a full five horse crop they must furnish a sufficient number of laborers to cultivate the said crops. They are to have one fourth of all that is made consisting of the following crops, Corn, cotton, sweet potatoes, wheat, fodder, and the fourth of peas that is housed.. They are to have none of the meat or oats.. They will have the privilege of putting in the oat field four (4) hogs.. But they have to pay for the corn they eat and all that is fed on.. If one of the said laborers leaves before the 1st of January 1867 he forfeits all interest in the crop.. And is to receive no pay for the time he worked.. but if i turn one off i agree to pay him or her for the time they have worked..
