State of North Carolina, Nash County
This agreement made and entered into this the [[strikethrough]] 1 day [[/strikethrough]] 1st day of January 1866 between Matilda Mann of the county of Nash and State of North Carolina and Crawford Ricks Freedman of the County and State aforesaid: Witnesseth that I the said Matilda Mann have this day hired and employed the aforesaid Crawford Ricks freedman to cultivate all of the pine trees inwhich have been boxed or cultivated previous to the present year on my Elm Lane plantation, on the following terms and conditions, Viz, I the said Matilda Mann do bind and obligate myself to furnish the aforesaid Crawford Ricks freedman when employed in the cultivation of the aforesaid Pine Trees, good rations, free of charge to him the said Crawford Ricks Freedman, and also to furnish him the said Crawford Ricks, all the barrels he may need for the various kinds and qualities of turpentine, procured from the cultivation of the aforesaid pine trees, free of charge to the aforesaid Crawford Ricks freedman, and I the said Matilda Mann do promises and bind myself to give to the aforesaid Crawford Ricks freedman one fourth of all money derived from the sale for all the turpentine, he the said Crawford Ricks freedman may diss barrel and deliver to me the said Matilda Mann, after deducting one fourth part in money of all cast to the said Matilda Mann in sending to market and selling the same,
