Contract of Labor - 1866.

This indentiture this day made and entered into between Kemp P. Battle of Wake County, N.C. of the first part and the free Laborers of the second part, Witnesseth. That the said Laborers have agreed to work for said K. P. Battle from this date 1st of Jan, 1866, to the first of Jan, 1867. To work in the woods doing all kind of labor pertaining thereto. Also to strictly obey and respect the superintendant, to go to work and quit work at his signals. They also agree not to drink intoxicating liquors to excess, nor to conceal the same. To be responsible for logs or breakage of tools. All lost time to be their logs. If they breake [[break]] this contract, they may be discharged and they and family be removed at the expiration of three days thereafter.
The said K. P. Battle agrees to furnish good quarters to said laborers and to pay Jim Lawrence 12$ per month and if he proves faithful, at the end of the year, his wages to be increased to 15$ per month. He further agrees to furnish to said Jim Lawrence 4 lbs. of Pork, and 1 Peck of meal per week. He also agrees to pay these wages quarterly, retaining one half of these wages to end of year -
