1st Jan -- 1866 - Contract for Labor for 1866 --
This Indenture this day made and entered into between W.R. Cox of the county of Wake and State of N.C. of the first part and the undersigned force laborers of Edgecomb County of the second part, Witnesseth. That the said laborers have agreed to work for the said Cox from this date to the 1st of Jan, 1867, to work in the woods doing all kind of labor pertaining thereto. Also to strictly obey and respect the Superintendent, to turn out to work, and to cease work at his signals. They also agree not to drink any intoxicating liquors to excess, to be responsible for the loss and breakage of tools. All time lost to be their loss. If they break this contract they subject themselves to be discharged and they and families and effects to be removed at the expiration of three days thereafter offending. The said W.R. Cox agrees to furnish said laborers with comfortable quarters and to pay them 12$ per month and if they prove faithful their wages to be increased to 15$ per month at the end of the year. He also furnishes the laborers with 4lbs of Pork and 1 Peck of meal per hand per week. He also agrees to pay the above wages quarterly retaining one half of said wages to the end of the year --
