Con Tract for labour

This Indenture made and entered into this 9th Day January (A.D.) 1866 between Thos S Maner of the County of Edgecombe State Northcarolina of the first part and the undersigned Farm laborers of the second part. Witnesseth that the said laborers have agreed to work for the said Maner from this date to the first day January 1867 to do all kind of labour common to the farms of the county to commence work usually early and work usually late to do their work faithfully, To be respectful in their deportment and they further agree that one half of their monthly pay shall be retained by the said Miner till the end of each year and that the amount so retained shall be forfeited by a violation of this contract and they further agree that time lost by absence sickness or [[?]] with out leaf shall not be paid for and the said Maner has agreed that he will furnish the said laborers with comfortable quarters sufficient rations and the amount money per month which stands opposite their names, that he will treat them kindly and encourage the establishment of schools for their children.
