Contract of Labor 
This Indenture made and entered into on 23rd day of January 1866 between Theo Thomas of the County of Edgecomb and State of North Carolina of the first part. and the undersigned free laborers of the second part.

Witnesseth that the said free laborers have agreed to work for the said Theo. Thomas from the 23rd of January 1866 until the 31 day of December 1866 - to do all kinds of work common on farm that the said Theo. Thomas may direct, to do their work faithfully and to be respectful in their deportment. They further agree that one fourth of their monthly pay shall be retained until the end of the year and forfeited by the said free laborers in case of a violation of this Contract, and they further agree that time lost shall not be paid for, and they further agree to loose no time (sickness excepted) without the concent of the said Theo Thomas- The said Theo Thomas agrees to clothe Hasty and feed and clothe Phillis and pay Hasty The amount of money which stands opposite the names of the undersigned free laborers
