The understand John H Price White on the one hand, and Philip Clark Colored on the other, have this day mutually agreed and bound ourselves to the full observance of all the conditions of the following contract to wit: That in consideration of the sum of one hundred & Twenty ($120.00) Dollars to be paid by the said John H Price to the said Philip Clarke on the 1st day of January 1867 the said Philip Clarke binds himself to work on a farm the whole of the present year for the benefit of the said John H Price, and to do such work and at such times as the said John H Price may direct. Said Philip Clarke promises cheerful obedience to all orders of said John H Price and is willing that a reasonable deduction be made for all time lost either by sickness or otherwise and that should he leave the farm before the end of the present year for the purpose of working elsewhere or with the intention of not returning thereto he agrees to forfeit all the wages due him for the time he may have worked for the said John H Price. The said Philip Clarke agrees not to absent himself from the farm at any time without permission of the said John H Price under the penalty of forfeiting his wages for the time of such absence.
