Contract for Labor

This Indenture made and entered into on the 9th day of March 1866 between Jesse H. Powell of the County of Edgecombe and State of North Carolina, of the first part and the undersign free. Laborers of the second part

Wintnesseth that the said Laborers agrees to work for the said Jesse H. Powell, from the 23rd day of January to the end of the present year, and to commence the days worth at light and to continue until dusk, and to do all kinds of work comonly done on the farms in the county. to do the work faithfully and to be respectful in their deportment. 

And they further agree that two thirds of their monthly wages shall be retained by the said Jesse H. Powell, until the end of the year, and that the amount so retained shall be forfeited by the violation of this contract. 

And that the time lost by sickness, illness, or with consent shall not be paid for by the said Jesse H. Powell.

And they further agree if they leave the farm without consent from said Jesse H Powell or his superintendent, they are to pay one dollar for every day so lost, and they further agree to pay for the rations they use when not at work.
