Contract for Labor

This indenture made and entered into on the 10th day of July 1866 between John Ward (white) of the first part and John Lewis Freedmen of the second part, both of Nash Co & State of N.C. Witnesseth that the said John Lewis does hereby agree to work for the said John Ward from the said date until the 25th day of December 1866, to do all kinds of work common to the farms of the Country to work from sunrise to sunset of each day, to do the work faithfully, to loose as little time as possible, to be respectful in deportment. And I agree that one half of my monthly pay shall be retained by the said John Ward, till the expiration of this contract, and that the amount so retained shall be forfeited by a violation of this contract, and I further agree that time lost by idleness or absence without leave shall not be paid for. 

And the said John Ward has agreed to furnish the said laborer with comfortable quarters sufficient Rations and the amount of pay per month set opposite their respective names, to treat him kindly and encourage the establishment of Schools for the education of his Children
