This indenture made and entered into on 18th day Jan 1867 between J. W. Barret, of the County of Nash in State of North Carolina  of the first part undersigned freed Labourers of the Second part, Witnesseth, that the said Labourers has agreed to work for the said J. W. Barret, on his mothers farm from this date to the 1st day of Jan 1868 to do all things of laborers command to the farms of the County, to do these work faithfully and to be respectful in his deportment and the said J. W. Barret dos [[does]] promise to give them one half of the proceeds that they make on the farm and if the said laborers shold [[should]] leave before the first of Jan 1868, they shal [[shall]] forfeit one half of their wages & if the said J. W. Barret turns him off before the time possible above he shal [[shall]] pay them for wages without he has a just cause for so doing The said laborers is to pay for one half of the furtillizers [[fertilizers]] and cultivate the farm well. The said labours are to board themselves. Said Barret is to furnish one horse or mule & feed for same.
