The undersigned agree to work for W.R. Cox during the year 1867, and to do all kinds of labor usual on Edgecombe farms, and in getting crop to markett, and  said W.R.Cox agrees to give the wages opposite to their respective names, monthly on the following terms; viz: 1st. they [[smeared ink]] to obey promptly, such manager, as may be placed in charge of the plantation. 2nd. They agree to move as at such signals, as may be given, by the superintendant, both to commence, and cease from labor, and night work shall not be required except in emergencies, when it shall be paid for, Saturday afternoons may be taken as holiday, but paid for out of the wages of the laborers. 3rd. The manager may discharge hands for breach of Contract, when one half of the wages due shall be recovered as forfeiture and the discharged hand, and family if required shall vacate the premises. 4th. House rent to be free as long as the occupant, is employed. Fuel furnished without charge, but manager may direct, where it is to be cut. Poultry, One Pig (not to run at large) and a garden spot, furnished. Rations furnished per week . Five pounds bacon or pork, One peck of meal to men, four pounds of bacon or pork to women, for others in proportion. Other animals than above are not to be kept, on farm without consent. 5th. Payment of wages quarterly, one half reserved, to ensure faithful performance of Contract. 6th. Stock to be attended to Sundays as usual. 7th. Stealing, drunkenness, carousing, quarreling and fighting forbidden. 8th. Loss, or careless, or wilful destruction of implements or injury to stock, to be made good out of wages. 9th. The employee shall loose all lost time and payment for board shall be required. This is the first day of January 1867.
