Contract for renting land


This indenture made and intered into on the first day of January 1867 between R.H. Gorham of the County of Edgecomb and State of North Carolina on the first part and the undersigned freed laborers of the second part. Witnesseth that the said laborers has agreed to pay said Gorham for the rent of the farm known as the T F Cherry farm (20) twenty bags of cotton from from sand and leaf bag to contain each (400) four hundred pounds  Said Gorham further agrees to become responsible for all debts contracted during the year 1867 to cultivate and carry on said farm, said laborers agree to pay said Gorham for all debts contracted by the use of his name if it takes the entire crop and stock of the farm and farming implements, Said laborers further agree to move nothing from said farm untill said Gorham is paid, Said Gorham gives said Laborer the privilige of selling their crop said Gorham receiving the proceeds of the sale from the purchase untill all debts contracted by the use of said Gorhams name are paid. Said Gorham agrees that said laborers have the use of his gin house and screw to sack and gin their crop of cotton, the cotton to be free from hulls and sand, Said laborers agree to have nothing to do with the residence and appurtenances of said farm, Said laborers agree to enclose the farm with a good and lawfull fence and clean out all the ditches of the farm.
