Contract for 1867
Walnut Creek Farm

The undersigned agree to work for Kemp. P. Battle, during the year 1867 and to do all kinds of labor usual on Edgecombe farms and in getting crop to market, and said Battle agrees to give the wages opposite to their respective names, on the following terms; Viz:
1st They promise to obey promptly such manager, as may be placed, in charge of the plantation.
2nd They will work from sunrise to sunset, with two hours, for dinner, from the first of June to the first of September, the rest of the year from light to dark. Night work not required, except under pressing emergencies, Saturday afternoons, except under pressing emergencies, may be taken as holiday, but paid for by the hands. 3rd The manager may discharge hands, for breach of contract, when one half of the wages due, shall be recovered as forfeiture, and the discharged hand, and his family if required shall vacate the premises. 4th House rent to be free as long as the occupant, is employed. Fuel furnished without charge but manager may direct, where it is to be cut. Poultry, one Pig, (not to run at large) and a garden spot furnished. Rations furnished per week 5 lbs of bacon or Pork, 1 Peck of meal to men, 4 lbs Bacon or Pork to women, for others in proportion. Other animals than as above, not to be kept on farm, without consent. 5th Percent of wages quarterly [[one half?]] reserved to ensure faith full performance of contract. 6th Stock to be attended to Sundays as usual. 7th Stealing, drunkenness, carousing and quarrelling and fighting, forbidden. 8th Loss or careless or wilful destruction of implements or injury to stock to be made good out of wages. 9th The employee to loose all lost time and payment for board during lost time may be required. 10th Said Battle agrees to sell the hands for themselves and family corn and bacon or pork, without rising in price during the year.
