July 30th 1867

The bearer of this paper writing, who is my son Jacob, called Jacob Suggs, has my permission to labour for himself & hire himself to any person of his choice, upon the condition that said party or parties who thus employ, shall pay to the undersigned the sum of Twenty five dollars per Annum, the balance to him of the wages agreed upon-

If any party thus hiring shall neglect or refuse to pay the amount specified as due of his wages to the undersigned, then she holds the right to herself to recover his entire wages & a payment made to him will be considered worthless.

It is further understood that he is to work by the year or month or not to do what is termed "days work."

He is now nineteen years (19) old & will be free two years (2) years from this date.
