Howard Major General O.O.
Washington D.C.

Genl. John. B. Callis who is a Capt in my regiment and Bureau Agent at Huntsville has been nominated for Congress at a County Convention and will probably receive the District nomination. Some bitterness grows out of this and complaints are made to me of alienation of the races and of injury to reconstruction. As it is the first case within my knowledge in which a commissioned officer has received such nomination I respectfully ask that you action it yourself or send me immediate instructions in the premises.
Please do not let this be published on account of our regiment connection.

Howard Major General O.O.
Commr Washington D.C.

In review of my being relieved here, please ask Genl Grant if I cannot have the three months permission to delay joining my regiment which has been customary and which I supposed I would have received at the time I was mustered out of my Volunteer Rank if ordered then to join, you are aware that I was uninterruptedly in the field during the War and have since been arduously engaged. If granted please have it officially telegraphed to me. If not please have a thirty days leave of absence sent to me at Nashville If you have any good reason why. I should come to Washington I would prefer that to either. Please telegraph reply.

Transcription Notes:
Really unsure of the C/V letter in the margins. Also can't tell if its Aashvillo or Nashville (both are places in Alabama)
