There is but one Colored school in this Sub District, at this place, taught by a white person,(Mr Lockhart)I have seen him in regard to this subject, and whom the possibility of establishing other colored schools, but no encouragement was given, unless the requisite funds were furnished by the Bureau, as the colored people are too poor to support the necessary number. Much good in the cause of education might be effected if assistance was lent by the Bureau, and teachers could readily be found to conduct the schools. Applications for assistance by the destitute poor, have been confined to beet two cases, one white & one colored. No information of disturbance, acts of violence or crime has reached me, and I have just reason to believe that everything is progressing quietly and prosperously. I have had but little time or opportunity to inform myself thoroughly as to the affairs in my club district, as I have command of my company, stationed here, (there being no affair on duty with me) and the duties pertaining to that, engross much of my time and attention.
Very Respectfully
Your obedient Servant
