IV Freedmen's Schools

Regarding the subject of Freedmen's schools, there is a greater revolution in public opinion than the most sanguine imaginations could have anticipated. Schools are demanded now in almost every neighborhood, while a year ago in many places in this district it would not have been safe to have tried to establish them. I consider the country ripe for a complete system of common schools under the direction of the State.

The Schools now in operation are in a flourishing condition, and nothing but the lack of funds prevents their number being multiplied indefinitely

The following is a Statement of the Schools and the average attendance of pupils at present

There are in Demopolis 169 pupils
There are in New Bern 82 pupils
There are in Bucks Chapel 82 pupils
There are in Livingston 115 pupils
There are in Greensboro 80 pupils
There are in Gainesville 200 pupils
There are in Prairieville 98 pupils
