Sub. Dist. of Demopolis B.R.F. &c
Demopolis Ala. June 30, 1868

Major Geo. Shorkley
A. A. A. Genl.
Montgomery Ala.

Sir,

I have the honor to submit the following General Report of opperations of the Bureau R. F & A. L. of this Sub. District for the month of June 1868.

The business of the office have materially increased during the month, and the quite [[quiet]] of May has been superceded by frequent complaints by Freedmen of assaults, being turned off upon trivial excuses &c. There is evidently an increasing disposition to harass and oppress the colored people for the purposes of gain and from political motives. The severe labor in the crops is over and pretexts are evidently sought upon which to get rid of the laborers. In some localities the fear among the freedmen has approximated to terrorism, several parties have been placed under bonds and the freedmen reassured that they will be protected in their civil and political rights, Similar reports are received from the agents
