field, and I hope, by prudent management, we may be able to do much good. On account of the very high prices of everything here, however, it will cost us more, perhaps, than you would expect, to live comfortably, and to enable us to transact business correctly and promptly.

I ought not to close, I presume, without saying something of colored schools. There is a very flourishing school here, numbering about 100, I think, taught by Mr. Wheeler.

There are schools of several other places in the Sub. Dist. Concerning these I will write more in future.

The colored people manifest a great desire for information. They are very desirous to know how, and for whom to vote. They say they have had no instruction on this subject. I am giving this subject special attention.
