Aug 31/68 by a selfish desire to gain their support at the coming election - is a question. The freedpeople on the other hand although in the main respectful & well disposed still hesitate in placing the utmost confidence in the white people, and with few exceptions are inclined to keep aloof from them as much as possible. Concerning that which a new occupying so intensely the minds of both classes of the community - the present political canvass, and coming elections it is to be hope that the same may be exempt from the bitter strife & violence so often productive of the worst results. that we may have peace even here. a peace not only quietly obtained but of the noble enduring sort.
