Office B.R.F.&.A.L
Eutaw Ala March 25/68

Lieut A. S. Bennett
Sub Asst Com
Demopolis Ala

Sir

I the honor to report that this has been a month of unusual excitement and disturbance in general. on the 14th Inst J. B. F. Hill colored School Teacher was assaulted and beaten by the citizens, and ordered to leave the county, which he did in a few days after. On the morning of the 20th Inst the Court House in Eutaw was burned. the fire originated in the Clerks office. All the records of that office were consumed. but the records of the other offices were saved. It is thought the building was set on fire by some white man. After the fire was over (I being absent, my office was broken open and all the records and papers of the office destroyed or carried off.

The freedmen are quiet and industrious and are generally doing well. About 100 Bushels of Government corn which was in the care of Judge Oliver and was not needed last year, and was by him loaned out, is now being called in and distributed among the needy and distressed. Four paupers are supported by the county.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt Servt
