Sir

I have the honor to report that all is going on smoothly at present. So far as I can learn, all the Freedmen that are [[strikethrough]]able [[?]]to work have employment and are doing very well. The county is supporting [[stop strikethrough]] six colored and one white persons (paupers) and would be fully able to care for all its paupers if last years taxes were collected. I will find some suitable person for that place and forward his name in a few days. I have not been able to learn what was done with the records &c stolen from this office. Their loss causes great inconvenience to me and in many cases injustices to the complainants whose cases were unsettled.

The colored School House at Springfield in this county was burned by unknown parties Several weeks ago. I have have made every effort possible to get persons to accept the offices of Sheriff, Mayor. Marshal &c of Eutaw but I can find no one that is willing to serve

Comparative quiet reigns at present.

Very Respectfully
Your Obt Servt
