T.L. Bevill, Esqr.,
Forrest Home, Ala.

My Dear Sir:

Your note by Wm Scales (Col) asking me to appear as Wm's counsel in the State vs Charles Stewart has just been rec'd. No one is more deeply sensible than myself of the fact that our true policy towards the negro is kindness conciliation and forbearance, and on is more pained than I that the tendency of things, as recently developed, is the other way. And I will heartily cooperate with you in vindicating this policy, and in any position which you may assign me, when I can do so consistently with my other engagements.

In the case of the state vs. Charles Stewart my relation to the defendant, personally, and his family are of such a nature, that I would do violence to my feelings to conduct the prosecution. Fully sensible of the confidence implied in me by your proposition, and assuring you
