In accordance with instructions, contained in your letter of 3rd Inst. I have the honor to report, that on the 9th Inst I reached Gainestown, Clarke Co. it is pleasantly situated in the pine woods about three miles from the Alabama river, the town proper consists of four or five wooden sheds, its white population comprises three families, each of whom keeps a store. I called to Mr Jack Wilson's house, but he was from home, having gone to attend the County  Courts, which were being held at a village called Grove hill, the County Seat. I next made an effort to procure a horse to ride over to Mr Osborne's plantation but was unable to obtain it. On making enquiries about the Post Office I was informed, that the institution was
