various lawless acts, that are daily being committed, but suffice to say that in the absence of law many persons have lost all regard for order or humanity. Colored persons are daily being discharged by their employers, and imposed upon in the settlement for their year's service, and frequently assaulted without any means of protection or address whatsoever.
Owing to the demoralized state of affairs the colored schools are nearly suspended.
It is to be hoped that the State or General Government will soon take steps to restore law and order, and protect the persons and property of the citizens of this country.
Under these circumstances I would call your special attention to the unfortunate condition of the colored people, who are most invariably homeless, poor, and inexperienced, as well as destitute of the sympathy due them from the white people.
Very Respectfully
Your Obedient Servant
