Savings and Trust Company" was established in this city on the 1st inst. with Mr. C.A. Woodward as Cashier. The existence of the Bank is not yet generally known, nit we are using every effort to have it advertised among the people. Up to this time nearly five thousand ($5000.00) dollars have been deposited, and I expect a large increase during the next month.
The Small Pox has almost become an epidemic in my District and is a source of much trouble to me. I have urged upon the people the necessity of having their servants vaccinated and this is being generally done. I hope that in another month the progress of this disease may be checked entirely. Enclosed I send slips cut from the columns of the "Advertiser" "Register" and the "Times" of this city. I send them for the information of the General and not to annoy him. They show the "Animus", of the Southern Press, and this spirit is calculated to keep up a feeling of hostility towards every one who is now or may have been in the service of the Government. As additional proof I enclose a copy of a letter recently received by Captain Francis Lyons. I have known, he once commanded a regiment in my brigade and I have always found him to be a brave and efficient officer.
The Muster-out of the 86th U.S.C.I. has been postponed and for the present I shall not need any additional officers, except such as I can obtain from the troops here.
