winter. From Talladega I proceeded to Blue Mountain, thence to Jacksonville, Calhoun County. Here I found Lt Col Gurney 2nd N. Y. Cavalry, who is in command of a Sub District in that section, composed of Calhoun Randolph & Cherokee.

Col Gurney expressed great willingness to aid us in any way, & will act as Agent for Calhoun County while he remains there. I secured the following Agents, in addition to those mentioned above: Captain Zeticker, 12th Iowa Infty. stationed at Wedah, Randolph Co. Captain Reed 12th Iowa Infty. Centre, Cherokee Co. Captain Sanford, Alexandria, Calhoun Co.

I found in this portion of the state comparatively but few negroes, and generally among the citizens a disposition to treat them justly. Among planters I can detect a rapid change of sentiment in reference to Freedmen. They are anxious to hire negroes and there is a growing disposition to treat the negro fairly & justly.
