I have the honor to submit the following report of Bureau operations and Freedmen's affairs in this Sub Dist. from the 1st day of Jan'y 1868 to the 31st day of Jan'y 1868, in accordance with circular No 4 series 1867 from the Commissioner

1st  Crops.  There has evidently been enough made to render to country self sustaining for the present year, and there will be but little if any need for the issue of government rations to the poor in this Sub Dist provided the planters will give remunerative wages and deal justly with the laborers

2nd  Schools.  There are but two colored school in my Dist. at this time, one at Selma and the other at Opelika; though there are children enough to authorize the establishment of schools at various other places in the Dist which would doubtless be done if the Freedpeople were able to pay their own tuition. They seem to appreciate the value of an education, and in every instance where they have had schools, have made rapid progress. The establishment of a general
