I have the honor to report upon the general aspect of affairs in my district and to make certain inquiries.
The general report from the plantations is, that the Freedmen are working, quietly and efficiently as ever. Physical violence is rarely reported. Hectoring and cursing, the weakness of individual masters and overseers, is frequently complained of, which, of course, I [[protest?]] against, as unwise, but encourage the freedmen to bear as patiently as they can, and consider as an insufficient cause of breaking their contract.
The demand for labor is unparalled Besides the eager applicants from the surrounding country, half a score of gentlemen from have applied to me, whose wants cover [[strikethrough]] of [[/strikethrough]] over a thousand laborers. Failing here they have gone on the
