School Affairs remain about the same as last reported except there may have been an increase in the number of pupils. The teachers having been requested by Supt of Education, Dict. of Ala, to report to him direct, leaves me without the data for a full and exact report.
The "Lincoln Temperance Society of Selma," organized by recommendation of the Commissioner, and the "Band of Hope," are the only known temperance organizations in this Sub-District They are doing very little in their province. It is proposed in furtherance of the cause of temperance, as soon as the election, which has absorbed for the time nearly all other interests, is over, to organize "Lincoln Temperance Societies at different and prominent points.
The business of the office for the month, so far as relates to the collections of dues to freedmen for farm labor, had not been particularly gratifying, the prior liens for rent and advances, in so many instances covering the entire products. The inactivity of Justices of the Peace and the number vacancies have greatly retarded business.
