colored many injuries. At my request the commanding officer of Jacksonville arrested Murphy, and Martin, charged with the murder of a colored man in this county. At different times during the month three colored men within my knowledge, have been found and taken from their homes, in the night, by armed and disguised men, whipped unmercifully, and released; the heartless outlaws has been so successful in this practice, that we have been entirely defeated in every attempt to ascertain who the guilty parties are. Owing to the numerous reports of irregularity, and prejudice in the Justice Court, I have requested the Judge of Probate to determine all cases where Freedmen were interested; in their respective counties, as authorized by Acts of the State Legislature of 1865, and 66.
