I have attempted to investigate one of these complaints but have been unable to accomplish anything as the complainant was unable to identify the parties who committed the assault upon him; all these complaints I have referred to the Justice of the Peace, with directions to report the result of their investigation to this office.
During the past month I have visited every part of my Sub District for the purpose of inspecting schools, and find the colored people very anxious for schools, but unable to do much towards supporting them. All the schools that they have are supported by the colored people, but are not so fully attended as they would be for the reason that the larger portion of the parents of the children are unable to pay for their tuition.
At the time of my inspection there was eleven schools in this Sub Dist, taught by the pupils of the Normal School at Talladega Ala who will close their schools on the 1st of October as they wish to return to school. Since that time
