some two or three of the above mentioned schools have been closed, as the teachers could not obtain enough to pay their board from their pupils.
There are about sixteen hundred (1600) children between the ages of six and eighteen in this district to be educated: of which number there are but about three hundred (300) attending schools, this large difference is caused by the inability of the colored people to pay for a teacher and the want of suitable buildings for school purposes. There are some six points in this Sub District where schools are needed.
Since my last report the Hospital at this place has been increased from fifty beds to one hundred and at this time has sixty eight patients. The patients in this Hospital are well cared for under the immediate superintendence of A.A. Surg. W.B. Van Duyn who is in charge.
