General,
In August last as 1st. Lieut. 50th U.S. Col'd Inft. I was assigned to duty with the B.R.F. and A.L. at Montgomery Ala.
In October last, knowing that my time would soon expire in the U.S. Service I wrote to my brother then in California urging him to return to the States,- invest his capital with my own in the mercantile business. My brother arrived at this place in January last, the prospect of success in the mercantile business was then very poor. On the 5th day of February I received notice that my Reg't was under orders to muster out of service, on receiving said note with the prospect of my soon being out of office, I urged my brother to combine his capital with my own in the purchase and cultivation
