Sub-District of Mobile, Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands Mobile, Ala, Sept 12th 1868. Bvt Lt Col Edwin Beecher Asst. Commr. B.R.F.& A.L. State of Alabama Sir, I have the honor to report that on the 12th of August, I relieved Bvt Maj James Gillette 15th Infantry from duty as S.A.C. at this place, pursuant to telegraphic orders from Brt. Brig. Genl T H Ruger On the 14th of August I received on order from Brt. Brig. Genl O.L. Shepherd directing Lt. E.H. Weirman to relieve me from duty in the Bureau and in anticipation of his arrival I was appointed A.A.Q.M. & A.C.S. of this Post on the 17th of August, which duties I performed in addition to my Bureau duties until Lieut Weirmans arrival. I found everything in the Bureau working smoothly as organized by Maj. Gillette, and endeavored to keep matters in good order for my successor.
