WHO: THE CONFERENCE ON WOMEN'S CULTURE IN AMERICAN SOCIETY 1880-1980 at the WOMAN'S BUILDING

WHAT: The Conference will have three session per day on women's experience:

(Saturday) 10:00 - 12:00 Cultural Diversity
1:15 - 3:15 Community Organizations
3:30 - 5:30 Female Heroes and Feminist Communities
(Sunday) 10:00 - 12:00 The Sex-Gender System
1:15 - 3:15 Female Labor Force Participation
3:30 - 5:30 Labor Organizations and Political Organizations

Registration will be Saturday at 9:00 am.

Speakers include playwright E.M. Broner, women's historian and writer Kathryn Kish Sklar, Mary Jane Hewitt, director of the African American Art Museum, union organizer Genora Dollinger, Sherna Gluck, project director for the film "The Life and Times of Rosie the Riviter," Vera Davis, Santa Monica community activist, JoAnn Sebastian Morris of the American Indian Education Commission and Rosalinda Mendez Gonzales, historian.

WHY: The conference will provide a framework for women's future participation in the public sphere by recognizing the issues and tasks of women belonging to the diverse ethnic, racial, and economic communities, in American Society. Conference participants will examine social issues of concern to women and acknowledge women's contribution to public policy through the organizations they have formed and supported. The weekend will provide an arena for scholars, writers and community organizers to discuss their work with the general public, as well as provide an historical context for the current movement toward women's rights.
