Minneapolis Oct 12, 1928

Dear Sidney, notice "red 12" on cal today wh denotes that it is a holiday somewhere but not in Minn. Somebody introduced a bill in our legislature some years back trying to make it a legal holiday but the [[illegible]] said "What for"? "Leif Erickson discovered this country." And I believe if you give them time enough, they will make the documents, and age them, to prove it. Maybe it was so. But they quit and let someone else endure the hardships, and now want the "Glory"! - But this wasn't what I started to write about. Have recd three letters from your Maw, asking me to let her come to Minn. and live with me. But I cannot do this. There are lots of reasons why. An old person transplanted into this cold winter country would be miserable. My house is not suitable, as there is no heat upstairs except what rises via the stair-way. We like it for we all sleep with open windows and keep the room closed during the day. However were I constructing a house, I shd have all the rooms heated. Then I do not think it wd be right to ask Mildred to assume the care that is likely to
