The Surgeon General,
U. S. Public Health Services,
Washington, D. C.

Dear Dr. Cumming:

Your kindness in writing me regarding the lecture which I gave to the Public Health Service officers is very much appreciated. I was naturally anxious that the presentation should give an impressive picture of conditions as they really exist in Arctic Alaska. So much fiction is added to a few facts, concerning the North, that the public is quite misinformed much of the time.

Photography has been my hobby since boyhood, and this has stood me in good stead in the research that I have attempted.

Dr. Messner and I had talked over the possibility of my going again this year. It will be quite a personal sacrifice, but I feel that the opportunity for service warrants my doing it. Your expression of approval for my efforts this last summer, together with the hope that I may go again this year, is most gratifying. I am giving the matter careful consideration, and expect to be able to make arrangements for absence both from practice and school work. I shall notify you definitely within the next two weeks.

Reciprocating kindest regards, I am

Very truly yours,
L.M. Waugh
