prelude I have heard him soar in eloquence and inspiration in response to some inadvertant [[inadvertent]] suggestion that led into the vague reaches of ethics or ambition. Perhaps the "unfortunate" deanship was the responsibility necessary to spur the element [[strikethrough]] necessary [[/strikethrough]] required to make a productive scientist out of him. I shall watch the University of Illinois with a lot of interest.

But that is not what I wanted to write. I wanted to express a deep desire to see you, to chat with you, to enjoy you. Being where I am, how can I do it unless I ask you to let me see you when something brings you to Chicago? Wont you do that. Nicodemus is willing to sit on a door step at any odd hour for the privilege.

You see, I dont want to lose the treasure of your friendship just because I am now "just a dentist" and not an educator.

Practise is being built slowly but surely. And I am enjoying it. People must always be interesting to poet or painter or dentist. And interesting they are. To be sure I miss the young life of the class room and that last word in science that stiffens the spine and raises the chin. But the joy I find in reading what in the old days I could not for want of time is a wonderful recompense.

Wont you give my regards to Charles when you see him and tell him I hope his laboratory may be the focal point of American Dental research.

Best wishes to you always

With sincerest regard.

Newton.
