Dear Dr. Waugh:

I wish to thank you for your letter of November 23 which reached me yesterday. I was greatly interested to learn that you intend to visit Alaska during the coming year in company with your son and that you will use Bethel on the Kuskokwim as your headquarters.

With reference to your questions, I wish to say that I shall write to various persons for more definite information than I can furnish, and as soon as I have this on hand shall forward same to you. I can answer some of your questions right now although not completely.

Airplanes carrying mail fly weekly from Anchorage to Bethel and other points to the west, and usually encounter no difficulties in flying over the mountain ranges. As a matter of fact, I understand the trip is very worthwhile for one may see many more interesting things traversing this country by air than it would be possible otherwise. The cost would not be excessive but I shall have to inquire about it. As you may know, we fly from Fairbanks to Nome and even to St. Lawrence Island and find that [[crossed out]] in the long run [[/crossed-out]] airplane transportation is not only the quickest way but the cheapest in the long run. I shall be glad to get more definite information for you.

Regarding a name for your boat, I think it will be very simple to find an interesting name for it and, as you say, an Eskimo name would be very suitable.

I know the S.S. Tupper which makes the annual trips from Seattle to Bethel very well. Even if this vessel is somewhat early for your trip, she could perhaps carry all your equipment which you could send directly to the vessel at Seattle. Everything could be taken care of at Bethel upon the arrival of the boat there. I have some good friends at Bethel who would be glad to handle this for you if you wish.
