Commander R. W. Dempwolf
U.S.Coast Guard
550 Federal Office Blbg.
Seattle, Washington

Dear Commander Dempwolf:-

Your kind letter of the 27th of November is deeply appreciated. I have conveyed your cordial greetings to Commander and Mrs. Jones, and to my wife, and am instructed to express their hearty reciprocation.

Your deep interest in my plans has been one of the important facts that has encouraged me to go forward with plans. These are well under way. I have been to Washington and conferred with Dr. Hrdlicka, the Coast & Geodetic Survey, Commander Parker and others of the Coast Guard, Indian Service and Public Health Service. All are interested in helping me. I have also written to Bethel, Alaska as per Dr. Hrdlicka'a suggestion; the capatin of the S.S. Tupper of Santa Ana Line, Capt. Whitlam of the North Star. I have gathered all the information possible of conditions, and have planned a boat with a naval architect. The drawings are enclosed for your suggestions or approval. I agree with you that it would be a saving to have it built in Seattle, or if we could locate a suitable used boat, I should be glad of the saving. If you approve, I shall be glad to take advantage of your kind offer to get bids for her construction, the placing of the engine, running gear and stove. I can get these at wholesale thru the University. The toilet, basins, tanks, piping connections etc. to be included in the price of building. The engine, I seem now to prefer, is a Lycoming 4 cylinder, gas, 40 h.p. at about 2000 rpm. It weighs only 390 lbs. and costs only $290. and is much liked hereabout for dependability.

The question of transportation is troublesome. The Tupper leaves, as you say, May 10th, and I want to leave Seattle about June 20th. We could go to Seward or Anchorage and fly to Bethel but I should like to avoid the extra cost. We shall, undoubtedly, have to fly out in the Autumn.

Your very nice Christmas Greeting arrived yesterday. Thank you for the thought.

Please be assured of my deep appreciation of your help. Without it, I fear I should not have attempted this cruise.

Yours very truly

P.S. Have just received a letter from Capt. Whitlam and am enclosing copy of my answer.
