Mr. William W. Atkin
"Silvermine"
Norwalk, Connecticut
My dear Mr. Atkins-

The finished drawings reached me thru Mr. Chapman with surprising promptness. I thought I would see the preliminary one for study and suggestion. However, your good work seems to meet with general approval. I sent a set to Doctor Krdlicka, Curator of Physical Anthropology, Smithsonian Institution, and have gone over these with two of my close Coast Guard friends and all heartily approve. I have sent a set to Commander Dempwolf, Commander of Section Base 12 at Seattle. He will confer with captain of the North Star, the boat of the Indian Service, and he probably knows more of the conditions along the Alaskan Coast than any one. If they approve, we shall go ahead with the bids.

I have one small suggestion. I should like the enclosed cabin to extend forward about 24 inches. I should like to have head room over the basin the bow compartment. The toilet need not have full head room. To me, this seems a simple change. I trust you can agree. The hatch can be moved forward a little to allow for this.

I shall also take a 4-cylinder outboard for emergency. How would you provide for its attachment? If placed on the stern, I presume the dinghy would have to be either placed in the cockpit or towed.

I am anxious for a final plan and to get it underway. I shall get a bed from Mr. Spregue in due time.

Again thanking you, and with best wishes for a most prosperous and happy New Year,

LMW.J Yours very truly
